Density, Viscosity, Refractive Index, and Surface\nTension of Binary Mixtures of 3‑oxa-1,5-Pentanediol with 2‑Propanol,\n1,2,3-Propanetriol, and 1‑Decanol from 283.15 to 403.15 K as\nReference Systems for Evaporation Experiments
Thermophysical properties of potential reference systems for the\ncharacterization of evaporators, especially wiped film evaporators,\nare presented. Therefore, the binary mixtures of diethylene glycol\n(IUPAC: 3-oxa-1,5-pentanediol) with decan-1-ol, glycerol (IUPAC: 1,2,3-propanetriol)\nand isopropyl alcohol (IUPAC: 2-propanol) were considered. The refractive\nindex at 293.15 K (589 nm) was measured using a refractrometer. The\ndensity was measured in a temperature range from 283.15 to 403.15\nK depending on the boiling temperature of the fluids using an oscillating\nU-tube. The dynamic viscosity was determined in a temperature range\nfrom 283.15 to 403.15 K depending on the boiling temperature of the\nfluids using a kinematic viscometer based on a modified Couette measuring\nprinciple (Stabinger viscometer). The surface tension was measured\nin a temperature range from 293.15 to 363.15 K using the pendant drop\nmethod. The temperature dependence of the density, viscosity and surface\ntension of the pure components was described using standard literature\nmodels. The excess properties excess refractive index, excess molar\nvolume, Δln(η/mPa·s)<i>E</i> and excess parachor were modeled using a temperature dependent Redlich–Kister\napproach.
