Versatile Strategy\nto Develop Sequence-Defined Conjugated\nMacromolecules: A Powerful Tool toward Tunable Optoelectronic Properties
Conjugated sequence-defined polymers represent a cutting-edge\narea\nof polymer science, merging the precision of biological macromolecules\nwith the versatility of synthetic polymers and the unique properties\nof conjugated systems. While early reports focused on activation/deactivation\nstrategies, this Letter presents the first orthogonal approach to\ndeveloping sequence-defined conjugated macromolecules (CMs), incorporating\na new monomer at each reaction step. In CMs, the primary monomer sequence\nmeticulously determines the optoelectronic properties. Step-by-step,\nfeatures such as structural defects, chain length, dispersity, functional\ngroups, topology, and monomers used in the backbone are carefully\nconsidered and controlled, with optical data provided to support the\nnecessity of sequence-defined approaches in CMs. Additionally, a pioneering\nand repeatable modular approach is introduced, connecting different\northogonally developed sequences. This method enhances efficiency\nand accelerates the synthesis process, facilitating comprehensive\nstructure–property analyses and paving the way for tunable\nmaterials with record-breaking properties.
