Revisiting Electronegativity\nand Electronegativity\nScales

The concepts of electronegativity and classical electronegativity\nscales are briefly described. Electronegativity scales have practical\nquantitative applications, and this work suggests activities which\ncan assist students select the scales for use in chemistry applications.\nIt provided examples of the use of an appropriate electronegativity\nscale, for estimating bond lengths, bond dissociation energies, and\ndipole moments. Expressions are introduced for estimating internuclear\ndistances in ionic, covalent, and intermetallic compounds and bond\ndissociation energies. Estimated values of bond lengths, bond energies,\nand dipole moments using different electronegativity scales are compared\nwith experimental values and show that the levels of performance are\nnot the same for different electronegativity scales. Additional proposed\nactivities are included.
