The concept of a Blind Hydrogen System
The Blind Hydrogen System (BHS) is introduced as a novel framework for subsurface hydrogen exploration and stimulation, focusing on geological configurations beyond visible surface features such as "fairy circles." BHS is both a conceptual framework and an exploration strategy for natural hydrogen. BHS integrates two pathways: the Discovery Pathway, which guides the identification of natural hydrogen accumulations through sequential assessment of reservoir, source rock, trapping, and water elements, and the Stimulated Pathway, which enables hydrogen generation by injecting water into iron-rich rocks under controlled conditions. Both pathways are underpinned by four critical elements—iron-rich rocks, water, heat distribution, and flow paths—whose specific characteristics influence hydrogen generation. The Discovery Pathway emphasizes geological and geophysical analyses to prioritize exploration, while the Stimulated Pathway requires understanding of rock and water chemistry to overcome technical barriers. Integrating both methodologies can enhance exploration efficiency and advance the viability of natural hydrogen, offering a transformative approach to sustainable energy solutions. • The Blind Hydrogen System is a novel framework for subsurface hydrogen exploration and stimulation beyond fairy circles. • Combines discovery and stimulation pathways for hydrogen generation. • Introduces a framework that focuses on iron-rich rocks, water, heat, and flow paths for hydrogen production.
