Resident Perspectives of Cultural-Led Regeneration: Pre- and Post-Event Perspectives of Destination Management and Placemaking

This research seeks to understand relationships between place management and placemaking. These notions are conceptualized, but not empirically evidenced. Guided by resistance and resilience theory that incorporates aspects of awareness, enthusiasm, and participation, this exploratory sequential mixed methods research begins by analyzing informative content qualitatively to uncover indicators and interprets relationships. Indicators informed a pre-event resident survey (N=451), analyzed through Exploratory Factor Analysis to provide case-specific statistical dimensions. In the post-event phase, another resident survey was conducted (N=515) using the same indicators. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) will be used for fine-tuning place-specific model fit. Once is complete, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will help identify significant relationships and look for influence by testing both directions as an attempt to remove the notion that place management and placemaking are at opposite ends of a continuum. This study is important because there is a need to further emphasize placemaking intentions in destination planning.
