A Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) -led food pantry intervention improves the pantry nutrition environment in Alabama
As food pantries serve populations experiencing food insecurity, they are key sites for public health interventions. From November 2021 to January 2023, this open-label, single-arm, pre- and post-intervention evaluated Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) technical assistance aimed at improving Nutrition Environment Food Pantry Assessment Tool (NEFPAT) scores. Analyses included independent t-tests, paired t-tests, and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. After technical assistance, NEFPAT scores improved (<i>n</i> = 28, 19.71 ± 5.86 to 25.79 ± 7.50, <i>p</i> < .0001). Findings highlight the need to support pantries and suggest a pantry’s nutrition environment can improve through SNAP-Ed partnership.
