Abiotic Synthesis of Organic Molecules in Extraterrestrial Environments - A Comprehensive Analysis of Formation Mechanisms in Space Rocks
The analysis of meteorites from diverse cosmic sources has revealed a remarkable diversity of organic molecules formed through abiotic processes. These extraterrestrial organic compounds range from simple amino acids to complex carbon structures, providing compelling evidence of chemical synthesis pathways operating throughout the solar system. This paper synthesizes the current understanding of the physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and quantum mechanical principles governing organic molecule formation in space, with particular emphasis on the catalytic role of electromagnetic radiation. Evidence from carbonaceous chondrites, Martian meteorites, and asteroid samples demonstrates that abiotic organic synthesis in space is driven by multiple complementary mechanisms, including thermal processing, aqueous alteration, radiation chemistry, and mineral catalysis. These processes have operated throughout solar system history, producing complex organic compounds that may have contributed to the origins of life on Earth.
