Translating Queer and Cultural Narratives Within the 'New Adult' Genre, with Reference to Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue
This dissertation explores the challenges and strategies involved in the translation of queer and cultural elements of novels in the New Adult (NA) genre. For this project, a translation into Brazilian Portuguese of an excerpt from Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel Red, White & Royal Blue was done to be analysed. The novel concerns itself with queer themes and cultural elements, as well as being an example of a NA narrative. This dissertation had as its aim identifying and exploring possible translation strategies that can be used to translate elements from these subjects, analysing how the use of each strategy could be applied and what its effect was on the target text (TT). The literature review explores the topics of LGBTQIA+ and NA Literature, Queer Translation Theory, Cultural Translation, Foreignization and Domestication, and Translation Strategies. A methodology was formulated from the background research done on the topics and applied to the translation of the excerpt. The examples chosen for analysis were then divided into four categories: Queer Language and History, Cultural Terms and Expressions, Language Choices, and Lost in Translation. The analysis found that a balanced approach that combined foreignizing and domesticating strategies was effective in maintaining the foreign and queer elements of the text while ensuring that it remained comprehensible to a Brazilian audience.
