Study on the effect of different porous materials on the solidification of peppermint-lemon-gramineus volatile oil

Chinese herbal volatile oils (VOs) have important roles in analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, insecticidal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, and are widely used in food safety, beauty care, and even pharmaceutical industries. However, the development of oral formulations and clinical applications is limited due to its special characteristics. Porous media adsorption technology, characterized by large specific surface area, large pore volume and strong adsorption capacity, is of great significance for the study of improving the stability of the volatile oil components in traditional Chinese medicine. The curing effect of porous starch (PS), porous calcium carbonate (PCC), cross-linked povidone (PVPP), and mesoporous silica 350FCP (350FCP) on volatile oil (VO) was comprehensively investigated through the indexes of material dosage, volatilization rate, and adsorption rate, in which it was found that: the optimal preparation ratios of each carrier material were VO:PS=2:4, VO:PCC=3:4, VO:PVPP=3:4, and VO:350FCP=7:4 and that PS and cross-linked polyvinyl ketone were effective in VO component retention. It provides valuable references for further development and resource utilization of VO.
