The Critical Influence of Network Characteristics on Virtual Machine Placement Strategies in Cloud Computing Environments
Cloud computing relies heavily on virtualization, with virtual machine (VM) placement being a fundamental challenge for optimizing resource utilization, performance, and energy consumption. While initial VM placement strategies often focused primarily on CPU, memory, and storage constraints, the network connecting these VMs and linking them to users is increasingly recognized as a critical performance bottleneck and a key factor influencing optimal placement. This paper explores the significant role of network characteristics—including bandwidth, latency, jitter, topology, and congestion—in shaping modern VM placement strategies. It examines how these characteristics affect application performance and inter-VM communication, necessitating the development of network-aware placement algorithms. The paper discusses various approaches to incorporating network awareness into placement decisions, analyzes the trade-offs involved, and highlights the challenges and future research directions in this domain, particularly considering the rise of distributed applications and edge computing.
