Last meal and dietary intake are associated with the likelihood of being overweight/obese among young adults during Ramadan fasting

This study addressed the association between mealtime and the likelihood of being overweight/obese among young adults during Ramadan fasting (RF). A total of 414 healthy young adults participated in this cross-sectional study. All variables were compared between fasting and non-fasting groups. No significant differences found in the energy and macronutrient intake between the two groups, but not with the first and last meals . In the fasting group, the last meal was positively correlated with energy, carbohydrate, and fat intake. The last meal between 17:50 h and 19:01h in the fasting group was associated with decreased odds of being overweight/obese (0.20, 95% CI 0.06, 0.64, p<0.01) compared with later last meal. Our study suggests that the last meal between 17:50 h and 19:01 h during RF is associated with a lower likelihood of being overweight/obese among fasting young adults compared to those with a later last meal.
