economic liberalization in the eyes of cinema reflections of economic changes in the era of indian economic liberalization
This article examines the impact of India’s 1991 economic liberalization on Bollywood cinema, using Mani Ratnam’s 2007 film Guru as a case study. Through narrative and thematic analysis, the paper explores how post-liberalization economic reforms transformed cinematic portrayals of entrepreneurship, ambition, and socio-economic disparity. It argues that Guru reflects both the aspirations and contradictions of a newly liberalized India, portraying the rise of a self-made business magnate against a backdrop of shifting political and economic landscapes. The article contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on political economy, media studies, and South Asian cultural transformation.
