Green turtle conservation in the Mediterranean
This research represents the first extensive genomic study of the green sea turtle (<i>Chelonia mydas</i>) population, which is classified as endangered in the Mediterranean by the IUCN. We demonstrate how kinship can be determined within the population and how this information can be used to elucidate the mating and breeding habits of female green turtles, as well as male contributions. Our findings provide a general approach to studying population dynamics and illustrate how genomic insights can support the monitoring of endangered populations, particularly in the context of conservation initiatives such as the breeding stock program.
