Geospatial Information System and its Application in Library and Information Science

According to available statistics and information, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have experienced an annual growth rate of over fifteen percent in the information technology industry in recent years. GIS has transcended the boundaries of geography and has begun to deal with spatial data. The International GIS Institute in the Netherlands changed the title of Geographic Information System to Spatial Information System at the fourth International GIS Conference held in 2007 at the Iranian Mapping Organization. This title change emphasizes the diverse applications of this system in areas beyond geography and in relation to spatial data. Following this name change, the term geographic data was also changed to spatial data. In various definitions of a library, emphasis has been placed on its spatial aspect. In addition to the library itself, the resources available within it and even the users also have a spatial dimension. GIS is useful in all these applications due to its use of spatial data and effective data management.
