Toxic effects of erythrophleum ivorense a. chev (bark) on stem – borer insect pest on the growth and reproductive stages of maize (zea mays) plant
The study investigates the efficacy of Erythrophelum ivorense bark extract toxins in controlling yellow stem borer in maize plant during their growth and vegetative stages. The experiment was performed at the Science laboratory Department of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria. The bark extract (water) was applied to the maize plants at different concentration and treatment level namely 0 (control), 5, 10, 15 and 20 mlkg-1. The result obtained showed that Erthropheum ivorense had the most significant effect on the stem borers infestation and reduces the mortality rate by 89.2% and 76.0% at the water extract concentration level of 10mlkg-1 and 2.0m/kg-1 respectively. The result is significant at 95% confidence interval. These findings proof that Erthropheum ivorense provides a good alternative bio-pesticide for farmers in the global south who will find this trial affordable for sustainable maize production than buying chemical pesticides.
