Female characters in Malayalam cinema have changed over time. Changes in cultural, social, visual and gender roles have reflected the representation of women in cinema. In early Malayalam cinema, women were usually portrayed as self-sacrificing, self-confident characters who symbolized family values. However, with the rise of new cinema movements, the portrayal of women became more profound and symbolic. The portrayal of women in Malayalam cinema underwent changes with the rise of "New Wave" cinema and socially conscious films during the 1970s and 1980s. Moving away from traditional characters, women began to be seen as more independent and confident, and as people who dealt with their complex issues and lives. With the advent of socially conscious films in the 21st century, issues such as women's rights, gender equality and women's empowerment have gained great importance.
