Barriers to Transitioning from Seed to Series A Financing in African Startup Ecosystems
The African startup ecosystem has experienced a geometric increase with venture capital (VC)investments growing to 5 billion USD in 2022 as compared to 400 million USD in 2015.1 However,a large bottleneck remains; there are numerous startups who do not make it between the seed andSeries A funding stages, and this makes them stagnate and eventually fail. This paper examinesthe legal, financial and structural causes of this stagnation based on the unique nature of seed andSeries A financing in African contexts.
