From Vision 2030 to Vision 2050: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Role of Global Cooperation in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
This paper critically examines the delays in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda, analyzing structural, political, and economic factors that have hindered progress. It explores challenges such as late adoption in developing nations, governance instability, capacity gaps, and economic insecurity, while assessing proposals to extend the SDG target year to 2050. The study emphasizes the importance of diplomatic engagement, trust-building, and strategic partnerships between the UN and national governments to accelerate implementation. It argues that while an extended timeline may appear as a retreat, it can also serve as an opportunity for intergenerational planning and alignment with mid-century climate and development objectives. The paper concludes that without robust governance, sustainable financing, and inclusive capacity building, extending the deadline alone will not secure success.
