AI-Based Object Detection, Distance Measurement and Speaking System for Blind Stick

The sense of sight is fundamental to how humans perceive and navigate their surroundings. For visually impaired individuals, the lack of vision creates significant challenges in detecting obstacles and measuring distances, making every day navigation both difficult and hazardous. To address these challenges, we propose an AI-based object detection, distance measurement, and auditory feedback system integrated into a smart blind stick. Unlike traditional systems, our design utilizes a lightweight and cost-effective Node-MCU microcontroller, three ultrasonic sensors, and a compact speaker to deliver real-time assistance. The ultrasonic sensors are strategically placed to detect nearby obstacles and measure their distance with high accuracy. These readings are processed by the Node-MCU and translated into immediate voice alerts via a speaker, enabling users to perceive their surroundings through sound. In addition, AI assistance is employed for advanced navigation. This system offers a user-friendly interface and is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It ensures enhanced mobility and autonomy for visually impaired users by combining efficient distance measurement with intelligent navigation. The result is a reliable, low-power, and scalable solution that significantly improves safety and independence in daily life.
