Freud's Defense Mechanisms and Peer/School Adaptation in ADHD Children: Associations and Implications
This integrative study examines associations between Freudian defense mechanisms and social/peer adaptation inchildren diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Using validated, age-appropriateadaptations of defense-assessment instruments and multi-informant measures of social functioning, we synthesizeconceptual links and present a hypothetical empirical dataset (N = 160) to demonstrate analytic approaches andexpected effect sizes. Results (hypothetical) indicate that higher use of immature defense mechanisms isassociated with poorer peer and school adaptation, whereas more mature/adaptive defenses predict better socialfunctioning, even after controlling for ADHD symptom severity. Implications for clinical assessment, school-basedinterventions, and psychoanalytic-informed behavioral therapies are discussed. Keywords: Defense mechanisms, Freud, ADHD, social adaptation, peer relations, school adjustment
