THE PREVALENCE OF INTESTINAL PARASITES AMONG THE STUDENTS AT KWARA STATE COLLEGE OF HEALTH TECHNOLOGY IN OFFA, NIGERIA.

The study investigates the prevalence of intestinal parasites among students at Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, aiming to identify common infections, understand transmission modes, and assess the impact on students’ health. Intestinal parasite infections are a significant public health concern globally, particularly in regions with poor sanitation and hygiene. These infections cause various health problems, including iron deficiency anemia and growth retardation, especially in children. The research employs a cross-sectional design, targeting 100 students (50 males and 50 females). Data collection involved stool sample analysis using both macroscopic and microscopic examination techniques. Results indicate a low prevalence of intestinal parasites among the students, with only one female student testing positive for Entamoeba histolytica cysts, representing a 1% prevalence rate. No male students tested positive. The findings suggest that effective hygiene practices and preventive measures might be contributing to the low prevalence rate observed in this study. However, the presence of a single positive case underscores the necessity for continued preventive efforts, regular screenings, and targeted interventions, particularly for demographic groups that might be more susceptible to infections. The study highlights the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices and the potential need for enhanced preventive measures to sustain the low prevalence rate and prevent future outbreaks.
