Urban Exodus, Rural Revival: Ecocriticism and Eco-Consciousness in Modern India's Migration Narrative

In contemporary India, a notable demographic shift is reshaping both urban and rural landscapes:financially stable urban citizens are migrating to rural areas in pursuit of a more eco-conscious, ethicallygrounded, and peaceful life, while rural inhabitants continue their exodus to urban spaces for education, employment, and socio-economic upliftment. This dual migration reflects the evolving complexities ofhuman values, environmental awareness, and sustainable living in modern India. Drawing on ecocriticism, this paper explores how environmental consciousness, ecological ethics, and a reorientation toward natureare catalyzing lifestyle transformations among India's urban middle and upper classes. It also examines thecontrast between urban aspirations of rural migrants and the spiritual and ecological yearning of urbanitesmoving to villages. Using real-life case studies of individuals and couples who have deliberately exitedmetropolitan life to adopt rural, environmentally attuned livelihoods, the paper situates this trend withinthe framework of ecocritical theory and ethical living. The works of Indian ecocritics and environmentalpoets, such as Nissim Ezekiel and Gieve Patel, provide a literary backdrop that enriches this investigation.Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines environmental studies, migration theory, and Indianliterature, the study offers insights into the redefinition of happiness, sustainability, and human-naturerelationships in post-globalized India. By foregrounding eco-conscious migration as both a socio-culturaland environmental phenomenon, this research underscores the importance of ecological sensitivity, community ethics, and value-driven living in the 21st century.
