An investigation of drinking water potability status from schools of Himayatnagar of Nanded district
Abstract A survey was carried out to evaluate the physical and chemical parameters of drinking water available in schools of Himayatnagar city of Nanded district, because in Himayatnagar ground water is the only source for drinking, commercial and agricultural purposes, and groundwater quality is influenced by human activities that cause pollution at the land surface. Groundwater originates from recharge rainwater infiltration from the surface. The unsaturated zone of land helps to reduce the concentration of some water pollutants, (especially microorganisms), but it can also act as a store for significant quantities of pollutants such as calcium, magnesium, chlorides, and fluorides. In the present study, the water quality of five schools in Himayatnagar city was investigated to check its potability status and after an investigation it is observed that, out of ten parameters; chlorides, Total Hardness, Sulfates and fluorides has found slightly higher in concentration as compaired to WHO’s drinking water standards, The regular consumption of water containing higher chlorides and fluorides can causes seviour health issues such as hypertension, osteoporosis, risk of stroke, renal stones. Where, high fluoride level in drinking water causes dental and bone fluorosis disease. After an evaluation of present research work suggestions was given to the school authorities to do not use the water for drinking without proper filtration or any other necessary treatment.
