CULTURAL CROSSINGS: MIGRATION AND ASSIMILATION IN MODERN ASSAMESE NOVELS
Migration has been an enduring and multifaceted phenomenon in human history. In the context of Assam, the migration of Bengali-speaking Muslims from East Bengal has been a particularly complex socio-political issue. This paper explores how Assamese literature, particularly through the novels Ashirbadar Rong by Arun Sarma and Rupabarir Palas by Syed Abdul Malik, reflects the influence of this migration on Assamese culture and society. It highlights how fiction not only captures historical and social realities but also plays a role in shaping collective identity, fostering empathy, and negotiating assimilation across generations.
