Optimization of Kenaf Yarn Quality using a Small Scale Kenaf Fibre Spinning and Reeling Machine
This study was conducted on the optimization of the quality of kenaf yarn spun using a small scale kenaf fibre spinner. The optimization aims to establish optimum performance indicators between operation variables (spinning speed and reeling speed) and their effect on response variable (spun yarn quality ratio). This was carried out using general full factorial design thereby refining the productivity of the machine. The experimental design consisted of 9 treatment with three replicates which gives a total number of 27 treatment and the experimental test parameters (spinning speed, and reeling speed) and quality ratio were determined according to their specific standards. The experiment was carried out at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan. The study used MINITAB 21 software to conduct statistical analyses of the general full factorial design (GFFD), analysis of variance (ANOVA), main and interaction effects, multiple linear regression model, and response optimizer (Minitab Inc, State College, PA, USA). Also, the validity of the model was checked using standard error (SE), coefficient of determination (r2), Adjusted r2, and prediction r2. The study results revealed that the application of spinning and reeling can produced the best quality of Tianung 2 variety using this studied machine From the analysis of variance (ANOVA), spinning speed and reeling speed had significant effects (P<0.05) on quality ratio. This indicates that changes in spinning speed and the reeling speeds impacted quality ratio using developed studied machine operation. Multiple linear regression model for the effects of spinning speed and reeling speed on kenaf spun yarn quality ratio using numerical approach were developed for predicting quality ratio in the course of spun yarn production. The models were significantly proven to predict 100% and the optimized spun yarn quality ratio during machining was achieved at spinning speed of 110 rev/min and reeling speed of 60 rev/min
