GENDER DISPARITIES IN STEM EDUCATION IN INDIA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOCIOECONOMIC FACTORS

This research paper delves into the gender disparities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in India, focusing on the impact of socioeconomic factors. With the objective to uncover and analyze the intricacies behind the gender gap, the study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023 and statistical analysis using SPSS to explore the relationship between socioeconomic status and female participation in STEM fields. The key findings reveal a significant gender disparity in STEM enrollment, with females significantly underrepresented, especially among lower socioeconomic groups. Factors such as family income, parental education levels, and regional economic conditions were identified as significant determinants influencing female students' enrollment and success in STEM fields. This research highlights the crucial role that socioeconomic factors play in perpetuating gender disparities in STEM education. The implications of these findings suggest that targeted interventions aimed at improving access and reducing economic barriers for women are essential for promoting gender equality in STEM education. The study contributes to the broader discourse on gender equality in education, offering insights that can inform policies and initiatives designed to support women's inclusion and success in STEM fields.
