Para servir e padecer como Cristo: uma análise do sermão "XXVII do Rosário" de Padre Antônio Vieira

In this article, we propose an analysis of the sermon "XXVII do Rosário," delivered by the Jesuit priest Antônio Vieira to a Brotherhood of the Rosary in the first half of the 17th century in Bahia. We aim to highlight Vieira's theological perspective on the issue of Black slavery, associating it with the prevailing Catholic intellectual context of the time, which legitimized captivity through the defense of the so-called "two slaveries." In this way, we seek to enhance the historical understanding of Antônio Vieira's writings, considered the foremost sacred orator of Portuguese America, as well as to shed light on the Jesuit's discursive strategies regarding slavery and how the Catholic Church contributed to the perpetuation of the slave system in colonial Brazil.
