Human Values and National Identity in Post-Independence Indian Cinema
This paper explores how Indian cinema, since the country's independence in 1947, has served as a cultural mirror that reflects and shapes national identity and human values. Drawing from landmark films and the narratives of postcolonial evolution, the study traces how cinema has responded to socio-political transitions, promoted unity in diversity, and engaged with moral and ethical challenges. The role of directors like Satyajit Ray, Mehboob Khan, Shyam Benegal, and recent auteurs like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Shoojit Sircar is examined. The paper highlights how Indian cinema contributes to nation-building by reinforcing human values such as empathy, justice, resilience, and secularism.
