Ethnomathematics and Child Development: Pattern, Issues and Prospects
This paper explores ethnomathematics, a field that examines the mathematical ideas and practices embedded in diverse cultures and their connection to child development and education. It emphasizes how cultural contexts shape mathematical understanding and argues for the integration of ethnomathematical approaches into curricula to create more inclusive and equitable learning environments. By connecting mathematics to students lived experiences and cultural backgrounds, ethnomathematics aims to enhance engagement, understanding, and appreciation for the diverse ways mathematics is practiced worldwide. Drawing on theories of enculturation and acculturation, and sociocultural learning the paper discusses various examples of ethnomathematics in different cultures and educational levels. It also underpins ethnomathematics as a tool for equitable learning environment and culturally inclusive education. It concludes by advocating for the integration of ethnomathematical perspectives in early childhood and K–12 education, ensuring that mathematics instruction is inclusive, culturally relevant, and socially just.
