Saproxylic water beetles of Poland

The current state of knowledge regarding saproxylic water beetles in Poland is summarized, with particular emphasis on their biology. Four saproxylic water beetle species are found in Poland – Macronychus quadrituberculatus, Potamophilus acuminatus, Pomatinus substriatus, which are xylophages, and Prionocyphon serricornis, a saprophagous species that develops in dendrotelmata. It is proposed to treat the first two as indicator species of natural waters.
