Impact of COVID-19 on the Indian Research Sector

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented disruption across the Indian research sector, significantly affecting funding patterns, institutional operations, and the pace of scientific activity. Restrictions on mobility, closure of laboratories, and delays in grant disbursement resulted in stalled research projects and reduced access to critical infrastructure, especially in non-COVID-related disciplines. Early-career researchers and women academics were disproportionately impacted, highlighting pre-existing inequalities within the system. However, the crisis also acted as a catalyst for innovation. Institutions quickly adapted by shifting to virtual platforms, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and accelerating biomedical research and diagnostics development. Government and industry partnerships increased, leading to advancements in testing, treatment, and surveillance technologies. Despite the challenges, India's research output particularly in health and virology aw a surge. This dual impact underscores the need for resilient, inclusive, and digitally-equipped research ecosystems capable of responding swiftly to future global challenges.
