FastGrow Trees: A Review and Roadmap for Accelerated-Growth Strategies in Semi-Arid Reforestation
Rapid revegetation of degraded semi-arid landscapes is severely constrained by the decade-long maturation period of conventional native tree species. This review synthesizes recent advances in genetic, biochemical, and ecological acceleration strategies that hold the potential to reduce the time to functional maturity to ≤24 months. We examine three primary pillars of innovation: CRISPR-mediated gene edits targeting flowering-time and hormonal pathways, bio-augmentation through soil microbiome co-cultivation, and integration with robotic deployment platforms. We map these approaches onto a practical framework utilizing systems such as the X-FOREST drone-sensor platform. Finally, we outline a three-phase research and development roadmap for field validation, while addressing the critical considerations of biosafety, gene-flow containment, and the broader socio-ethical implications of such technologies.
