The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Information and Library Science : Opportunities and Ethical Considerations

Abstract AI is making big changes in how libraries work! It's like giving library staff super helpful tools that save them time and make things better for everyone who uses the library. Think of it this way: · Turning Old Paper into Digital Files: Libraries have lots of old stuff like books and newspapers that are only on paper. AI can use something called "computer vision" to scan these and turn them into digital copies. This keeps these old materials safe and makes them easy to search and read online. · Smart Organizing: Imagine a robot that can read books and automatically sort them into different categories, like history, science, or fiction. AI can do this! It understands the text and figures out what the main topics are, so librarians don't have to do it all by hand. · Super Smart Search Engines: When you search online in a library catalog, AI helps you find what you're looking for even if you don't use the exact right words. It understands what you mean. This makes finding information much faster and easier. · Personal Recommendations: Have you ever gotten a suggestion for a book you might like? AI can do that in libraries too! It looks at what you've borrowed or searched for before and suggests other things you might enjoy. It also helps librarians know what books are popular so they can buy more of them. · Chatbots for Questions: Imagine being able to ask a question to the library at any time, even when it's closed. AI-powered chatbots can do this! They can answer simple questions in a friendly way, just like talking to a real person. Of course, using AI also means being careful. Libraries need to make sure that AI is fair to everyone, keeps people's information private, and is used in a way that's right. People should still be in charge, and AI should help all library users equally. Basically, AI is making libraries more efficient, easier to use, and better at managing information. It's a really exciting time for libraries!
