TEACHER MOTIVATION REIMAGINED: HERZBERG'S THEORY IN THE PRIVATE SCHOOL CONTEXT
This study explored the factors influencing job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among private school teachers in General Santos City, Philippines. Amid concerns about teacher retention, the research used Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory and a qualitative phenomenological design. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews with ten purposively selected teachers and analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that motivational factors like purpose, student growth, recognition, autonomy, and teacher-student relationships enhanced satisfaction. Hygiene factors such as poor administrative support, low compensation, lack of resources, and excessive workloads contributed to dissatisfaction. The study also identified emerging influences, including instructional creativity and role complexity, which spanned both motivation and hygiene. The results suggested that Herzberg’s framework was useful but required adaptation to address the complexities of private school environments and empower teachers.
