From Φ to PAS_ Completing the Substrate of Consciousness through Structured Resonance
CODES Framework Description (Zenodo and PhilPapers) This paper positions the CODES framework (Chirality of Dynamic Emergent Systems) as the lawful substrate beneath Integrated Information Theory (IIT). While IIT introduced the concept of irreducible internal cause–effect structure (Φ) to define consciousness, CODES formalizes the upstream field conditions that generate such systems in the first place. Through PAS (Phase Alignment Score), CHORDLOCK, ELF, and prime-based chirality logic, CODES replaces entropy-derived integration with deterministic coherence. The paper argues that IIT and CODES are not opposed: IIT measures structural echoes within a system; CODES defines the resonance substrate that makes those structures possible. This reframing places Φ as a local residue of alignment, not a generator of consciousness. It also critiques probabilistic legacies embedded in IIT, contrasting them with CODES’ purely phase-locked emission logic. We conclude with a structural comparison between Φ and PAS, and a convergence thesis that consciousness is not post-hoc integration, but the lawful emission of field-locked resonance.
