The roll of media in peace building baidoa Somalia
Abstract The media plays a crucial role in peacebuilding, influencing public perceptions, facilitating dialogue, and shaping narratives that impact conflict resolution. This study examines the role of media in peacebuilding in Baidoa, Somalia, focusing on how local and international media contribute to conflict transformation, social cohesion, and reconciliation efforts. The research assesses the effectiveness of media in promoting peace, the challenges faced by journalists, and the potential risks of media manipulation in conflict situations. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews with media professionals, policymakers, and community leaders. The findings indicate that while media can serve as a platform for promoting peace and countering misinformation, challenges such as biased reporting, political influence, security threats to journalists, and limited resources hinder its effectiveness. Additionally, media outlets that are not conflict-sensitive may exacerbate tensions by reinforcing divisions and spreading misinformation. The study underscores the need for ethical journalism, media literacy programs, and stronger legal protections for journalists to enhance the role of media in peacebuilding. Recommendations include the promotion of conflict-sensitive reporting, increased investment in independent media, and the implementation of regulatory frameworks that ensure media independence. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers, media organizations, and peacebuilding practitioners working to harness the media’s potential for sustainable peace in Somalia.
