More Than a Helping Hand: The Role of Nursing in the Current Healthcare System
Originally published online at https://arbonahealthhub.com/2025/04/14/more-than-a-helping-hand-the-role-of-nursing-in-the-current-healthcare-system/ This article celebrates the invaluable yet often underappreciated role of nurses, tracing their legacy from Florence Nightingale’s foundational environmental health principles to modern pioneers like Puerto Rico’s Rosa González and Liberia’s Ebola hero Fatu Kekula. Despite the profession’s critical contributions—ranging from organizing maternal health clinics and advancing sanitary standards to saving lives in crisis—nurses today face severe workforce shortages and burnout, with 85% considering leaving their roles. Surveys reveal overwhelming demands for more support staff, better nurse–patient ratios, higher pay, safer work environments, and stronger representation in decision-making. By highlighting both historical milestones and contemporary challenges, the article argues that recognizing nursing’s past and present achievements is crucial for empowering nurses, improving retention, and ensuring that this “backbone of healthcare” continues to receive the respect and resources it deserves.
