Transforming in the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: An Evidence-Based Review
ABSTRACT Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) include a variety of conditions that affect the TMJ and the muscles that help you chew. In the past, these conditions were mostly treated by making biomechanical corrections. Over time, treatment methods have changed a lot because we have learned more about what causes TMD and how to use evidence-based practices. TMD treatment has changed from invasive, occlusion-focused methods to a biopsychosocial, interdisciplinary approach that puts the patient first and focuses on non-invasive therapies. Future trends indicate a shift towards personalized medicine and regenerative therapies, bolstered by continuous research aimed at enhancing treatment protocols. This article aims to examine the evolving trends in TMD treatment from historical to contemporary practices, emphasizing the transition from invasive, occlusion-centric interventions to conservative, multidisciplinary methodologies. Keywords: Temporomandibular joint disorders, TMD, Biopsychosocial model, Physical therapy.
