Integrating Mahabharata's Ethical Principles into Artificial Intelligence: Harmonizing Ancient Indian Philosophical Concepts with Modern AI Ethics

Bringing Indian philosophical concepts into discussing artificial intelligence (AI) ethics creates a richerand more balanced approach. Dharma is at the heart of this integration: doing what’s right and fulfillingour duties. This principle can guide how AI systems operate, ensuring they support social values andethical standards. Another key concept is Ahimsa, which means non-violence. The aim is to uncoverthe parallels between the ethical dilemmas faced by characters in the Mahabharata and thecontemporary issues surrounding AI governance. We’re particularly interested in how concepts likeautonomy, responsibility, and moral decision-making from these ancient texts can inform our currentdiscussions about the ethical use of AI. Using a qualitative approach, we delve into specific episodesfrom The Mahabharata to draw insights relevant to AI ethics. For example, we examine Yudhisthira’sdice game, Krishna’s guidance to Arjuna, and the use of Krishna’s Sudarshana Chakra. These storieshelp us reflect on the risks of unchecked autonomy, the need to balance freedom with accountability, and the importance of using autonomous systems ethically. The Mahabharata offers rich analogies thatresonate with modern AI governance challenges. The text underscores the significance of ethicaloversight, human control, and moral responsibility in decision-making processes, which aligns withongoing discussions about AI's role in society.
