When Hope Visits a Cancer Ward: A Literary Exploration on the Role of Hope in Cancer Treatment Through Medical Humanities

Abstract Hope is one of the most enduring of all human attitudes. It is the origin of human perseverance and resilience amidst existential dangers. In oncological care, its presence— or absence— significantly influences patient experiences. This paper explores the transformative role of hope in cancer treatment through the lens of medical humanities, emphasizing its power as a narrative tool and therapeutic resource. Contrasting case studies of hope (Abhishek*) and despair (Rohan*) are presented to illustrate the dual impact of hope on patient outcomes. Through the use of storytelling and interdisciplinary insights from literature, philosophy and medicine, the paper advocates for a patient-centered approach to oncology. Here, hope acts as a crucial compass enriching the quality of life even when medical cure remains uncertain. Key words: Oncological care, Medical humanities, Perseverance, Narrative tool, Therapeutic resource.
