FORMULATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SOLVENT DEPOSITION SYSTEM OF ATORVASTATIN
A solvent deposition system (SDS) is defined as a solid preparation in which an active drug isdeposited from its solution in a volatile solvent on the surface of an excipient by evaporation of the solventused for the distribution of the drug. From the studies performed by investigators, it is quite evident that theuse of adsorbents can facilitate the dissolution process of relatively insoluble powders. Excipient used forpreparing tablet with high surface area can be a good candidate for use as carrier in solvent deposition systemThe main purpose of the study was to increase the amount of dissolved drug molecules at theabsorption site by increasing the dissolution rate, for class II drugs like Atorvastatin (AT) , asin vivo dissolution rate is rate limiting step in drug absorption.Atorvastatin (AT) is insoluble in water and its poor aqueous solubility and decreaseddissolution leads to decreased rate of bioavailability. Among techniques of dissolutionenhancement of solid dispersion is most commonly used. Recently solvent deposition systemtechnique a modified method of solid dispersion proved to be efficient in dissolutionenhancement. Solvent deposition (SDS) was selected as the method of choice since it wouldbe easier in subsequent formulating and processing of tablets.
