Revamping the Use of Instructional Materials in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics in Junior Secondary Schools Through Teacher Resourcefulness
This paper explores the pivotal role of teacher resourcefulness as a catalyst for revitalizing the effective use of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of Mathematics at the Junior Secondary School level. It discusses the concept of resourcefulness and highlights key qualities that characterize a resourceful teacher, including creativity, adaptability, innovation, and the ability to improvise with limited resources. The paper also underscores the significance of instructional materials in facilitating conceptual understanding, engagement, and retention of mathematical knowledge among students. Emphasis is placed on the use of audio and audio-visual teaching aids, with practical strategies for their integration into classroom instruction. Furthermore, the study examines methods for enhancing the quality and availability of instructional materials through local improvisation and technological adaptation. The paper concludes that a resourceful teacher not only maximizes the use of available teaching aids but also fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills in students. It recommends the consistent provision of instructional materials to schools and the implementation of regular in-service training programs to empower teachers with innovative instructional techniques.
