Increased Funding and Investment as a Panacea for Urban Infrastructure Deficit in Most Nigerian Cities

Nigerian cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt face significant urban infrastructure deficits due to rapid population growth, unplanned urban expansion, inadequate planning, and chronic underinvestment. This paper examines the urgent need for increased funding and investment in urban infrastructure in Nigerian cities. The study highlights its pivotal role in shaping cities by analysing the multifaceted significance of urban infrastructure through a comprehensive review of literature and insights from experts. The study begins by providing a comprehensive definition of urban infrastructure, encompassing its various physical components and systems, and develops a taxonomy to categorise and understand its diverse elements. The study highlights the diverse roles of urban infrastructure, including driving economic growth, improving quality of life, promoting sustainability, and fostering social interactions. It recognises that urban infrastructure is crucial for cities to thrive and plays a vital role in supporting the diverse needs and aspirations of residents. Based on the analysis, the study advocates for increased funding and investment in urban infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on government support. It presents evidence of the positive impact of adequately funded infrastructure, such as improved transportation networks, reliable water and energy systems, and the creation of accessible public spaces. The study also addresses potential challenges and proposes strategies to overcome funding and investment barriers, including the exploration of public-private partnerships and innovative financing mechanisms. By highlighting the importance of urban infrastructure and advocating for increased funding and investment, this study contributes to the ongoing dialogue surrounding urban planning and development. It provides a basis for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders to recognise the critical role of urban infrastructure and prioritise its funding and investment for sustainable and prosperous cities in the future.
