Societal beliefs, Prejudices and Negative Attitudes Towards Inclusion

African societies generally expect everyone to respect and adhere to their values and principles. People prioritise the group's wellbeing and expect everyone to contribute to the community's welfare. The overall notion is based on the concept of “I am because we are” (ubuntu). There is mutual respect for each other, especially for the elders. Unfortunately, this is not being practised because of negative attitudes, belief systems and prejudices that the society upholds about certain persons because of their conditions. This paper states that societal negative attitudes refer to prejudiced, discriminatory, or harmful beliefs and behaviours directed at individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. It also looks at the various forms of negative attitudes, myths, and beliefs upheld by society towards such persons. The advent of inclusive education, its practices, and awareness creation are essential to combating these negative attitudes, beliefs, and prejudices and fostering a more humane and equitable society.
