The Impact of Gamification on Student Engagement: An International Literature Review
This paper presents an international literature review of the impact of gamification on student engagement across formal and informal learning environments. Drawing on 50 peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025, it examines how game elements—such as points, badges, leaderboards, challenges, and narratives—affect behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The review highlights both the positive potential of gamification, including increased participation, motivation, and critical thinking, as well as its challenges, such as novelty effects and over-competition. Findings emphasize the importance of thoughtful, context-sensitive design informed by theories like Self-Determination Theory and Flow Theory to achieve sustainable engagement outcomes. This synthesis offers educators, policymakers, and instructional designers evidence-based insights for integrating gamification effectively into educational practice.
