End of Buddhist Lent: Conclusion of Discipline, Beginning of Universal Dhamma Propagation
The End of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa), observed on the full moon day of the eleventh lunar month in the Thai lunar calendar, marks the completion of the three-month rains retreat (vassa) mandated by the Vinaya and the beginning of renewed Dhamma propagation. The day’s key ritual, Mahāpavāraṇā, allows monks to invite admonition from fellow members of the Sangha with sincerity, fostering transparency, trust and harmony. This article presents the Vinaya background, cultural and spiritual significance, common practices during Ok Phansa and the roles of related institutions in preserving and promoting its importance in both religious and social contexts.
