The Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Building Materials in New Construction Projects

The shifting paradigm of construction practices towards sustainability, particularly in the adoption of eco-friendly building materials. With a focus on reducing carbon emissions and minimizing environmental impact, the study explores the challenges and opportunities inherent in transitioning from conventional construction materials to sustainable alternatives. By examining factors such as sourcing, cost implications, performance evaluation, market acceptance, and environmental impacts, the research aims to provide insights into the complexities and prospects of integrating sustainable building materials into new construction projects. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, case studies, and best practices, the study advocates for a holistic approach to sustainable construction, emphasizing the need for regulatory support, technological innovation, and stakeholder collaboration in driving the adoption of natural materials and advancing global sustainability goals. The aim is to enhance the sustainability of facilities by refining the process of material selection during the conceptual design phase and promoting the adoption of innovative materials with higher sustainability levels. There are various constraints on-site that influence material selection, including budget limitations, time constraints, site conditions, regulatory requirements, material availability, environmental impact, aesthetic requirements, performance and durability, compatibility and interoperability, and stakeholder preferences. Additionally, methodologies for data collection, decision-making models, and material specification are explored. The evaluation of different materials, focusing on methodologies, variables, data collection, and the assessment of materials based on sustainability determinants, such as recyclability, renewability, biodegradability, embodied energy, recycled content, energy efficiency, non-toxicity, local sourcing, water efficiency, carbon sequestration, durability, and adaptability. Through comprehensive analysis and categorization, stakeholders can make informed decisions to promote sustainability in construction projects.
