Essential Probiotic Strains for Human Health: Gender‑Specific Recommendations

This article explores the role of probiotics in gender-specific and holistic health. It highlights the core probiotic strains essential for all individuals, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and L. plantarum, while emphasizing strains particularly relevant to women’s health (L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, L. crispatus, Saccharomyces boulardii) and men’s health (Bifidobacterium longum, L. casei, L. helveticus, L. bulgaricus). Beyond biomedical perspectives, the paper integrates the concept of “moral communities” (Chumchon Khunatham) by linking probiotics with traditional Thai–Buddhist practices, such as the consumption of fermented foods, as part of cultural wisdom supporting well-being. It concludes that the appropriate selection of probiotics tailored to sex, age and health conditions combined with mindful living in line with Buddhist principles and community-based health promotion, can enhance physical, mental and social wellness. This integrative approach aligns with both holistic medicine and the emerging field of precision medicine.
