From Shepherds to Strategists: The Intersection of Pastoral Ministry and Human Resource Management

The study focused on Human Resource Management (HRM) and Pastoral Ministry which share core responsibilities in people management, leadership development, and organisational sustainability. While HRM focuses on workforce optimization, performance management, and talent development, pastoral leadership encompasses guiding, mentoring, and nurturing communities toward growth and purpose. This paper explored the intersection between pastoral ministry and HRM, drawing on Biblical case studies to illustrate key HRM principles such as workforce delegation, employee engagement, conflict resolution, and leadership succession planning. Using a qualitative research methodology, this study employed hermeneutical analysis of Biblical texts alongside comparative leadership studies to extract HRM insights from the leadership of Moses - delegation and leadership development (Exodus 18); Nehemiah -organisational culture and motivation (Nehemiah 2-6), and Paul - talent management and succession planning (II Timothy 2:2). The findings revealed that pastoral ministry served as an early model of HRM, demonstrating strategies for effective leadership, ethical workforce management, and structured talent development. This study concluded that HRM professionals can draw valuable lessons from Biblical pastoral leadership, particularly in mentorship, organisational culture, and employee well-being.
