Large Eddy Simulations for Fluid-Structure Interactions
Energy exploitation through offshore energy resources has experienced a significant increase in efforts to overcome the impact of climate change and global warming. Extreme weather conditions and challenging environments require further investigation into the interaction of offshore devices with realistic wave conditions to generate more cost-effective and reliable structures. In the present study, the in-house open-sourced Large Eddy Simulations (LES) numerical wave tank Hydro3D-NWT is employed to investigate the Fluid-Structure Interactions (FSI) in floating devices and explore the effect of turbulent flow on the efficiency of offshore structures. To examine the validity and efficiency of the code, various cases are examined such as the decaying motion of a floating sphere, the free fall of a triangular wedge, the rolling decaying motion of a rectangular box and the motion of a floating rectangular box interacting with monochromatic waves.
